Moving to a new home is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming. From packing and cleaning to coordinating schedules and settling into a new space, the to-do list can feel endless. At Mad City Moving, we have helped thousands of Madison-area residents and businesses move with confidence. We’ve learned a thing or two along the way about keeping the process as simple and stress-free as possible.
Here are a few of our best tips to make your next move stress-free.
1. Start Planning Early
Even if your move is weeks away, the earlier you start preparing, the better. First, make a moving checklist that details everything from gathering packing supplies to scheduling movers. Booking your preferred date in advance also ensures our crew can reserve the right team and equipment for your specific needs.
Packing Essentials:
- Boxes and Containers – We offer sturdy boxes and packing supplies for all your needs, available at a nominal charge. Get enough to handle all your belongings so you don’t have to hunt for boxes last minute. Orders over $50 qualify for free box delivery. All boxes must be taped and closed—no open tops.
- Wrapping Material – We supply unprinted newsprint to protect your belongings from ink stains. If you use newspaper, avoid wrapping delicate items like China or lampshades. Whenever possible, pack electronics such as TVs or computers in their original boxes for extra protection.
- Labeling – Unmarked boxes can become a nightmare. Keep marking pens handy in each room and label all sides clearly with the box contents and destination. Use wide packing tape (not masking tape) and make sure each seal extends at least halfway down both sides for extra strength.
- Sealable Plastic Bags – Use small bags to hold knobs, screws, handles, and other small items. Tape them securely to drawers or furniture where they belong.
- Trash Bags – Keep a trash bag in every room as you pack. It’s a simple way to avoid bringing unwanted items to your new home.
Spread the Word
There are many people that need to know you are moving so if you start contacting them early, you’ll be less likely to forget anyone.
- Mail Delivery – Pick up change-of-address cards from the post office or our office, and fill them out in advance.
- Utilities – Schedule disconnection or transfers for your home phone, water, gas, and electric services at the end of moving day.
- Financial Institutions – Let your bank know about any account transfers or updates.
- Insurance – Notify your insurance agent of your move. If your homeowners’ policy is prepaid, you may qualify for a refund.
- Credit Cards – Update your address now to avoid late fees or billing issues later.
- Pets – Reach out to your veterinarian for updated records and vaccination information before moving your pet.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
One of the best ways to save time and money is to declutter before you start packing. Go room by room and decide which items you truly need in your new home. Donate, sell, or recycle the rest. Fewer boxes means less time loading and unloading, and it makes unpacking at your new place much easier.
- Furniture – Get rid of anything worn out or oversized. Make sure large pieces fit through doorways and stairs at your new place before moving day.
- Kitchen Supplies – Use up perishable food and canned goods now. Movers can’t transport perishable items.
- Clothing – If you haven’t worn it in two years, you probably never will. Donate extra clothing to local shelters—they’ll put it to good use.
- Outdoor Equipment – Clean, empty, and sort items stored in attics or garages. Check for valuables or antiques before discarding.
- Yard Sale – Organize, label, and price items clearly. Advertise locally, have plenty of change ready, and remember—the goal is to clear space, so keep prices fair and reduce them near the end of the day.
3. Label Everything Clearly

When you’re knee-deep in moving boxes, nothing slows you down like searching for the one that holds your coffee maker. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. For fragile items, make sure “FRAGILE” is clearly marked on multiple sides. Our movers handle everything carefully, but those labels help keep items organized and safe from start to finish.
Basic Packing Rules
- Keep valuables like jewelry, important documents, and collectibles with you during the move.
- Boxes should weigh no more than 50 pounds and should not bulge or rattle when lifted.
- Fill empty spaces with packing paper and use smaller boxes for heavier items.
Organize by Room
- Kitchen – Pack items you use less often first. Use dish-pack boxes for fragile items and disconnect appliances ahead of time. Defrost refrigerators and freezers before moving day.
- Dining Room – Wrap China and crystal carefully, mark boxes “Fragile,” and remove shelves from cabinets.
- Living Room – Disassemble lamps and remove bulbs. Wrap framed art and mirrors securely and pack electronics in their original boxes if available.
- Bedroom – Empty dresser drawers and strip beds. You can disassemble beds yourself or have our crew handle it for you.
- Garage/Outdoors – Clean and drain outdoor tools and equipment. Gasoline-powered tools must be emptied of all fuel and oil.
- Plants – Most plants are too fragile for the moving truck. Move them yourself if possible.
- Pets – Keep pets calm and safe by maintaining their usual feeding schedule as much as possible.
4. Pack a “First Night” Box
Think of this as your home-away-from-home survival kit. Include must-haves like toiletries, a change of clothes, a few dishes, phone chargers, and any medications. Having these basics within easy reach means you won’t have to dig through boxes after a long moving day.
5. Confirm the Details Before Moving Day
A confirmation call or a quick email a couple of days before your move helps ensure everything will run on schedule. Confirm arrival times, access to parking or loading zones, and any special instructions for large or delicate items. Communication is key, and our office team is always ready to help finalize the details. Try to reserve a nearby parking space for the moving truck and ensure safe walkways are clear. When our crew arrives, walk them through your home and point out items not to be moved and those that should be loaded last.
6. Protect Floors and Doorways
A little preparation goes a long way toward protecting your home. Use floor runners, corner guards, or blankets to shield surfaces during loading and unloading. Our team is very considerate about keeping both the home you’re leaving and the one you’re moving into clean and damage-free.

7. Take a Deep Breath
When moving day finally arrives, trust the process. You’ve prepared, packed, and planned—now it’s time to let the professionals take over. At Mad City Moving, we treat every move with care, whether it’s across town or across state lines. Our crews bring the experience, the muscle, and the respect your belongings deserve.
Tips for the Day of the Move
- Label a “last day” box for miscellaneous items.
- Keep trash bags handy for quick cleanup.
- Mark boxes not to be moved.
- Before leaving, do one last walk-through to make sure nothing is left behind.
- Make sure the driver has your correct new address and working phone number.
Welcome to Your New Home
The first day in a new home can be busy and a little chaotic. Our crew will do their best to keep things organized, but your help makes a big difference. Show the movers where each room is located, and consider labeling doors (“Office,” “Guest Room,” etc.) so boxes end up where they belong. Keep children and pets safe in a separate room with food and water.
Settling In
Moving into a new home is the start of a new chapter. Take it one step at a time: unpack the basics first, get some rest, and don’t rush to hang pictures or rearrange furniture just yet. Once you’ve tackled the kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms, the rest will come naturally.
If your boxes are still in good shape after unpacking, contact our office—we’re always happy to recycle gently used boxes.
