Tips for Students Preparing to Move
College moves don’t have to be overwhelming— Read our full guide to stress-free student moving.
Schedule early: May and August book fast—aim for 6 weeks ahead in peak season. Know your exact move-out/move-in times and key availability upfront.
Declutter first: Sort keep/donate/trash before you start packing to get rid of things you don’t want to take with you. Madison’s free student junk removal is convenient for bulky items like furniture.
Pack smart: Label every box clearly using quality boxes, bubble wrap, and tape. We’ll drop off boxes if needed, or handle packing for you. List items for storage for faster delivery.
Prep appliances: Defrost and empty mini-fridges fully. Box mirrors and artwork securely.
Coordinate with parents/roommates: Share details so everyone’s on the same page.

We deliver your summer-stored items right when you need them, coordinating around dorm check-in or new lease keys.

Freshman Students

Move-Out and Summer Storage
May move-outs are our busiest time—we pick up from dorms or apartments, load everything carefully, and store it securely until August.

FAQ
During the busy moving season (May through October), we recommend scheduling at least 6 weeks in advance to help ensure your preferred date is available. During slower winter months, about a week’s notice is often sufficient, depending on availability.
Move times can vary depending on how everything is prepared and the amount of items moved. Most campus moves take a few hours, even less if there is not much furniture.Â
Our pricing is based strictly on an hourly rate plus mileage if outside Dane County. We also offer student specials for early requests!
We keep a close eye on the forecast and stay in communication with you leading up to the moving day. In heavy rain or significant winter weather (such as major snowfalls), we may pause or adjust the move schedule to keep your belongings and our crew safe, and we use floor runners and other protections to help keep your space clean.
We ask that you provide as much notice as possible and they will check the schedule to move.

Additional Campus Moving Services
Need to store your items in the summer? Mad City Moving offers secure, climate-controlled warehouse storage perfect for summer breaks, studying abroad, or semester gaps. All items are inventoried, blanket-wrapped and stacked efficiently. When you return to campus, we’ll deliver your stored belongings directly to your new place.
Student Packing
Packing can be an added stress when you’re trying to juggle finals, goodbyes, and travel plans. You can choose to have Mad City pack your entire space or just the rooms and items you don’t want to deal with yourself. Box delivery is available if you want to pack some items yourself and let the crew handle the rest.
In collaboration with UW- Madison, we help students who are moving get rid of unwanted belongings and donate to incoming students and community members. If you are interested in donating , learn more about the Badger Reclaim project.
